How to wear and style fall’s best skirts

Date: September 19, 2024

One of our favorite things about skirts is how versatile they are. They can truly go anywhere and do anything, from the weekend to the office to date night.

Maybe skirts are a mainstay in your wardrobe and you’re looking to refresh your stash for a new season, or perhaps you’re more of a denim person who wants to tiptoe into the skirt world. (Pro tip: start with the denim midi skirt!) Either way, fall 2024 is the perfect time to style up some skirts!

Meet our top picks for your closet below.

The Midi Skirt

The midi skirt will be your fall wardrobe workhorse, especially if it comes in denim. It’s one of the most versatile layering and styling pieces out there, which is probably why it remains so popular. We like a high-waisted, fitted silhouette with a front slit to keep it from looking too boho or matronly. (If you’re not a huge fan of denim, try a faux-leather or cargo skirt in the same silhouette.) On top, try a fitted, button-down vest for a ‘70s vibe, especially with cute suede ankle boots, or a loose-fitting T-shirt or sleeveless top tucked in to show off your waistline. At the office, pair your denim midi skirt with a tucked-in button-down shirt and pumps for a polished look that feels stylish, not stuffy.

A slim-fitting pencil skirt style is another super versatile midi skirt option. Everyone should have a great black skirt in their wardrobe rotation because you can wear it with anything and everything. For work, wear it with a sleeveless blouse and jacket, and on the weekend, pair it with a sweatshirt, sneakers, and a hat.

We’re also fans of the slip-style skirt, which is flirty and feminine for date night or a girls night out. Go super girly with a sweater and heels or tone it down with a casual striped tee and flats.

The Mini Skirt

Has it been awhile since you slipped on a mini skirt? Well guess what? It’s time! The mini is back in a huge way for fall 2024 and couldn’t be cuter and cooler.

Don’t be afraid of the mini length; embrace it! Tuck a denim shirt into a suede or corduroy miniskirt for a fun mix of textures and tones. Pair a denim miniskirt with a sweatshirt and jacket for a sporty vibe. A utility mini skirt is an ideal summer-to-fall transitional piece; style it with a cami tank while it’s still warm, then add a cardigan or denim jacket when it cools down later.

Because a mini shows off a lot of leg, it’s important to keep your tops either tucked in or cropped right at the waistline so you don’t look like you’re pantsless under a long sweater or top. If you’re really self-conscious but still want to rock a mini, wear a skort for extra coverage. (Whoever invented the skort, we owe you one.)

Shoes play a very important role in the success of your miniskirt look. Stick to flat shoes versus heels to tone down the 'mini' of it all, or add height with a lower heel versus a stiletto style.

The Maxi Skirt

We can’t talk about the best skirts without mentioning the forever fave, the maxi skirt! The 2024 version isn’t a full maxi that reaches the floor; it hits just around the ankle so you can have fun with your footwear. This fall’s trendiest maxi skirt is also more fitted than its predecessors, less flowy and boho-chic and more city chic. Go solid with a classic black maxi or play with patterns and colors. If your skirt is super fitted, try a looser top or cropped sweater, and if it’s a slightly flowier fit, go tighter on top.
